Substance Abuse Programs

Substance abuse treatment takes place in a wide variety of distinct treatment settings with a variety of different treatment approaches. For example, some substance abuse treatment can be carried out on an outpatient basis, where the person will typically receive treatment during the day but is allowed to return home daily. Other substance abuse treatment requires the person to stay in a hospital or residential facility during the entire course of treatment, which is especially helpful in handling more severe cases of addiction. Inpatient and residential substance abuse treatment can be done on a short term or long term basis, depending on various circumstances which can be different for each person. Most substance abuse treatment will focus on getting the individual physically rehabilitated, and then concentrate on underlying psychological and emotional issues which will help them avoid relapse in the future.

Detoxification

Detoxification is commonly the first step in getting off drugs. It permits an individual to be in a supervised setting while they go through withdrawal symptoms for drugs and/or alcohol. There are different types of detoxification. Theyvary from drug-free to medically supervised. A frequent mistake that quite a few addicts make is to assume that detox is enough to kick their habit. This is almost never the case. All detox does is get someone through the withdrawal when they stop using. It is often recommended that detox be followed up with some type of treatment plan to learn the root of why somebody was using drugs in the first place.

Detox for Methadone

Methadone detoxification is a course of action which must be supervised by addiction professionals within a drug treatment center who understand how difficult and challenging methadone detox can be. Methadone detoxification is known to be far more severe in terms of symptoms and duration than even heroin detox, and individuals frequently revert back to methadone to ease withdrawal symptoms or, worse yet, turn to heroin or prescription opioids to relieve symptoms. This is why methadone detox must only be done under close supervision at a drug rehabilitation program which has practical experience in handling this type of detoxification, and where the person can receive further treatment services to deal with all addiction issues.

Alternative Housing - Transitional Living

A halfway house is a transitional living facility where an individual who is recovering from drug or alcohol addiction can stabilize and re-acclimate to life and society as a drug free individual. A halfway house is a location where someone can feel safe and repair their life while recovering from addiction while also take part in activities which will help them do just that. Halfway houses are an ideal opportunity for recovering addicts to be in a setting where they can acquire additional counseling and different types of therapy while also learning new trades or obtaining stable employment so that they can support a healthy and drug free lifestyle.

Outpatient Treatment

Drug or alcohol rehabilitation services which are provided on an outpatient basis are available to addicted individuals who have circumstances which prevent them from being able to take part in an inpatient rehab program. An outpatient substance abuse rehab program provides many of the same services as an inpatient program, but allows for flexibility as opposed to an inpatient drug rehab center where the person is required to stay and reside at the treatment facility until treatment is complete. Outpatient drug rehabilitation is also offered for individuals who have completed residential or inpatient treatment but also need a comprehensive aftercare program which will offer additional support and therapy to help them remain clean and sober.

Residential Long-Term Treatment that is 30 days or longer

Enrolling into a residential long-term treatment facility (more than 30 days) is an effective way ofapproaching a severe drug or alcohol addiction problem. This type of drug rehab facility is more intensive than others that only last a few weeks or those where the client is free to come and go as they please. Attending a residential long-term rehab program (more than 30 days) means that you as the client will reside at the rehabilitation center around the clock while you are in recovery. While offering a more relaxed home-like setting the person has access to treatment professionals at all times. Long term drug rehabilitation programs are an excellent choice for those who have a long history of substance abuse or who have had other unsuccessful attempts at recovery in the past.

This specific group of addicted persons faces not only the personal shame of their addiction but also the reality of what their unhealthy choices may have caused their children. Recovery for pregnant/postpartum women often requires facilities that are both individualized and flexible in their treatment plan. While the length of stay may vary depending on the woman's particular needs it is recognized that the longer a person stays in treatment the better their chance of lasting sobriety. Many rehab facilities for pregnant/postpartum women run six to nine months on average.

Women Only

Rehabilitation from drug addiction is a process that can be challenging and in manyways intimidating. This is why some women seeking help with addiction feel more comfortable in treatment centers created specifically for women. Women who are addicted to drugs or alcohol typicallyhave personal issues that are much different than their male counter parts. In a drug or alcohol treatment center where all the clients are women, the recovering addict will feel more relaxed and will be able to share her personal issues that led to her substance abuse and addiction problems. Statistics show that up to seventy percent of women with addiction problems report having some type of sexual or physical abuse in their past. These sensitive issues are easier to address in the company of other women without fear of judgment or ridicule.

Residential Beds For Clients with Children

Although residential beds for clients children is not as common as other specialized types of drug treatment facilities, they are possible to find if you are in need. Back in 2007, the National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services documented that 515 (14%) of residential substance abuse treatment centers supplied beds for both mothers and their children. There is a substantial benefit to both the mother and child who are able to enroll in recovery programs that offer residential beds for clients children. The mother is able to receive the rehabilitation they need while remaining close with their children through the treatment process of substance abuse recovery. Most parents (mothers in particular) do not want to admit that they need help with their addiction issuesfor fear that their children will be taken from them. Self Pay (Out of Pocket)

Self payment drug rehabilitation facilities are an outstanding alternative to other types of rehab facilities i.e. private medical insurance and state funded programs. People who are capable of attending self payment programs pay for their entire rehab process out of pocket. Keep in mind though, this does not mean that they will not have access to financial assistance if needed. It just means that self payment is their primary method of covering the cost of their drug or alcohol rehabilitation program. To learn more about self payment at a specific program, contact a substance abuse treatment program and inquire as to their payment options. It is a good idea to contact a number of programs so that you have an understanding of your choices with regards to rehab options and payment methods.

Medicaid Coverage

Medicaid is a type of health insurance which is offered to people in certain low-income tax brackets. Eligibility for Medicaid is dependent on income and other circumstances such as whether or not the person has dependents and if they receive any other assistance. Medicaid may possibly even cover the costs associated with drug or alcohol rehabilitation, and there are a lot of drug and alcohol rehab programs throughout the country which are covered through Medicaid. Many drug and alcohol rehab programs which are covered through Medicaid may only deliver a limited treatment curriculum and may only provide such treatment on a short term basis, usually 30 days or less. People who have Medicaid should look for which programs cover the greatest amount of treatment for the most amount of time to reap the full rewards of a Medicaid rehab program.

Private or Personal Health Insurance

When an individual is addicted to drugs or alcohol and is looking for help, there are many effective drug or alcohol rehabilitation programs accept private health insurance. Whereas some outpatient and short term programs accept private health insurance, far more effective substance abuse treatment facilities which provide an inpatient or residential stay for at least 90 days are also an available option. These treatment programs which accept private health insurance can differ in terms of treatment curriculum, but those individuals who are covered by private health insurance are fortunate enough to have financial assistance when it comes to attending a drug treatment program. For additional information, consult with an addiction specialist at a drug or alcohol rehab center in your area to see which programs your private health insurance will cover.

Income Based Payment (Sliding Scale)

Paying for drug or alcohol treatment can be a problem, as all resources have been exhausted due to their addiction. Many drug treatment programs understand this fact which is why many drug and alcohol treatment programs around the country provide payment arrangements known as a sliding scale fee. There are several factors put into the equation of determining what the fee will be from person to person, and these factors are based on individual circumstances such as income, cash on hand, living circumstances, the size of one's family etc. Sliding scale fees have been in use for some time as most drug treatment facilities would rather find a way to make it work financially so that those suffering with addiction can acquire the help they need.

Payment Assistance (based on Facility)

Many drug and alcohol treatment programs in the United States provide payment assistance to men and women having difficulties with drug or alcohol addiction and want to get help. The person in need of rehabilitation can select a rehabilitation program which ideally fits their situation, meaning the treatment curriculum and design of the program will supply them the best results. The addicted individual can then seek advice from one of the treatment professionals at the drug or alcohol rehab facility to go over what kind of payment assistance options are available or that they qualify for. The financial department in most drug rehab facilities are more than willing to work with potential clients to get them started by offering payment assistance, and if this is unavailable, treatment professionals will usually work with the individual to find an equivalent or similar rehab facility which is more affordable or that can offer workable financing options so that they can get the rehabilitation they so desperately need.
