Substance Abuse Programs

Substance abuse treatment takes place in a wide variety of distinct treatment settings with a variety of different treatment approaches. For example, some substance abuse treatment can be carried out on an outpatient basis, where the person will typically receive treatment during the day but is allowed to return home daily. Other substance abuse treatment requires the person to stay in a hospital or residential facility during the entire course of treatment, which is especially helpful in handling more severe cases of addiction. Inpatient and residential substance abuse treatment can be done on a short term or long term basis, depending on various circumstances which can be different for each person. Most substance abuse treatment will focus on getting the individual physically rehabilitated, and then concentrate on underlying psychological and emotional issues which will help them avoid relapse in the future.

Detoxification

Detoxification is commonly the first step in getting off drugs. It permits an individual to be in a supervised setting while they go through withdrawal symptoms for drugs and/or alcohol. There are different types of detoxification. Theyvary from drug-free to medically supervised. A frequent mistake that quite a few addicts make is to assume that detox is enough to kick their habit. This is almost never the case. All detox does is get someone through the withdrawal when they stop using. It is often recommended that detox be followed up with some type of treatment plan to learn the root of why somebody was using drugs in the first place.

Outpatient Treatment

Drug or alcohol treatment programs which are offered on an outpatient basis are available to addicted individuals who have circumstances which prevent them from being able to take part in an inpatient treatment program. An outpatient drug and alcohol rehabilitation center delivers many of the same services as an inpatient program, but allows for flexibility as opposed to an inpatient drug or alcohol rehab facility where the person is expected to remain at the rehab facility until the treatment process is complete. Outpatient drug or alcohol rehab is also available for individuals who have completed residential or inpatient treatment but require a thorough aftercare program which will offer further support and treatment to help them remain clean and sober.

Residential Short-Term Treatment that is 30 days or less

Residential short-term treatment for substance abuse is a type ofrehabilitation program where the person will reside at the facility on an inpatient basis, and which usually requires a stay of 30 days or less. While attending residential short-term treatment the person undergoes an intensive but short duration of treatment that commonly incorporates a supervised detoxification, counseling, and other forms of therapy which are aimed at helping the individual to recover and be able to function without drugs in everyday life once treatment is complete. Residential short-term treatment is not always effective for all cases of addiction, and most will require an aftercare program or further treatment in a more long-term residential setting.

Self Pay (Out of Pocket)

Self payment drug rehab centers are an excellent alternative to other types of treatment facilities i.e. private medical insurance and state funded facilities. Individuals who are capable of attending self payment programs pay for their entire rehabilitation process out of pocket. Keep in mind though, this does not mean that they will not have access to financial assistance if needed. It just means that self payment is their primary method of covering the cost of their substance abuse rehabilitation program. To learn more about self payment programs, make contact with a drug or alcohol treatment center and ask about their payment options. It is a good idea to contact several facilities so that you have a comparison of your choices regarding treatment options and payment options.

Medicaid Coverage

Medicaid is a type of health insurance which is offered to people in certain low-income tax brackets. Eligibility for Medicaid depends greatly on income and other factors including whether or not the individual has dependents and if they receive any other assistance. Medicaid may even cover the costs associated with drug or alcohol rehab, and there are a lot of drug rehabilitation programs throughout the country which are covered through Medicaid. Most drug and alcohol rehab facilities which are covered through Medicaid may only provide a limited treatment curriculum and may only provide such treatment on a short term basis, usually 30 days or less. Individuals who have Medicaid should look for which programs cover the greatest amount of treatment for the most amount of time to acquire the full rewards of such a program.

Medicare Coverage

Drug addiction and alcoholism can effect many older Americans and seniors, and this problem continues to grow as each year passes. Seniors who are covered through the Medicare program, an insurance program funded through the federal government for Americans in this age bracket, can use their benefits to receive vital treatment services for substance abuse at a variety of drug rehab centers around the country. Medicare covers both inpatient and outpatient treatment programs, and seniors who are in need of help can consult with their primary care physician to choose a treatment program covered by Medicare which would be suitable for them.

Private or Personal Health Insurance

When someone is abusing drugs or alcohol and is looking for help, many effective drug or alcohol treatment programs accept private health insurance. Whereas some outpatient and short term rehab facilities accept private health insurance, far more effective drug rehab facilities which require an inpatient or residential stay for at least 90 days are also an available option. These treatment programs which accept private health insurance can differ in terms of treatment curriculum, but those individuals who are covered by private health insurance are fortunate enough to have financial assistance when it comes to paying for a drug or alcohol rehab facility. For more information, speak with with an addiction specialist at a drug or alcohol rehabilitation facility in your area to find out which services your private health insurance will cover.
