Substance Abuse Programs

Substance abuse treatment is offered in a wide variety of different treatment settings with a variety of different treatment methods. For example, some substance abuse treatment can be done on an outpatient basis, where the person will typically receive treatment during the day but is allowed to return home daily. Other substance abuse treatment requires the person to stay in a hospital or residential facility during the entire course of treatment, which is especially beneficial in handling more severe cases of addiction. Inpatient and residential substance abuse treatment can be done on a short term or long term basis, depending on various circumstances which can be different for each individual. Most substance abuse treatment will concentrate on getting the individual physically rehabilitated, and then concentrate on the root psychological and emotional issues.

Detoxification

Detoxification is typically the 1st step in getting off drugs. It allows a particular person to be in a supervised environment while they go through withdrawal symptoms for drugs and/or alcohol. There are various types of detoxification. Theyrange from drug-free to medically supervised. A typical mistake that many addicts make is to think that detox is enough to kick their habit. This is hardly ever the case. All detox does is get an individual through the withdrawal when they stop using. It is usually recommended that detox be followed up with some type of treatment plan to discover the root of why a person was using drugs in the first place.

Detox for Methadone

Methadone detoxification is a process which should be overseen by substance abuse professionals within a drug treatment center who realize how challenging and difficult methadone detoxification can be. Methadone detoxification is known to be far more severe in terms of symptoms and duration than even heroin detox, and users typically revert back to methadone to relieve withdrawal symptoms or, worse yet, turn to heroin or prescription opioids to alleviate symptoms. This is why methadone detoxification must only be done under strict supervision at a drug rehab program which has experience in handling this type of detoxification, and where the individual can receive additional recovery services to deal with all addiction issues.

Outpatient Treatment

Drug or alcohol treatment services which are offered on an outpatient basis are readily available to addicted individuals who have circumstances which prevent them from being able to participate in an inpatient rehab program. An outpatient drug and alcohol treatment program provides many of the same services as an inpatient program, but allows for flexibility as opposed to an inpatient drug or alcohol treatment center where the individual is required to remain at the rehabilitation facility until the treatment process has been fully completed. Outpatient drug or alcohol rehab is also available for individuals who have completed residential or inpatient treatment but also need a thorough aftercare program which will provide additional support and therapy to help them avoid relapse.

Women Only

Rehabilitation from drug addiction is a process that can be challenging and in manyways intimidating. This is why some women seeking help with addiction feel more comfortable in rehab centers created specifically for women. Women who are addicted to drugs or alcohol oftenhave personal issues that are considerably different than their male counter parts. In a drug treatment facility where all the clients are women, the recovering addict will feel more relaxed and will be able to share her personal issues that led to her drug abuse and addiction problems. Statistics show that up to seventy percent of women with addiction problems report having some type of sexual or physical abuse in their past. These sensitive issues are easier to address in the company of other women without fear of judgment or retaliation.

Men Only

Drug rehabilitation facilities created specifically for men are rising up across the nation. Although rehab facilities that work with both men and women continue to be the standard for drug and alcohol rehabilitation, many rehab facilities are providing programs designed to help a particular target group. These centers are able to focus on what their client's personal needs are in a way that standard facilities cannot provide. Although these specialized types of rehabilitation programs are not needed for all recovering addicts, many men are selecting men-only addiction rehab programs. This treatment option is best suited for those who feel more comfortable among others of the same sex when sharing private and often difficult memories from the past. Recovering from addiction is a challenging process for every addict and finding comfort among one's peer group is a great way of getting the support needed to make the process that much more endurable.

Self Pay (Out of Pocket)

Self payment drug treatment programs are an excellent alternative to other types of treatment centers i.e. private medical insurance and state funded facilities. People who are able to attend self payment programs pay for their entire rehab process out of pocket. Keep in mind though, this does not mean that they will not have access to financial assistance if needed. It just means that self payment is their primary method of covering the cost of their drug rehab program. To learn more about self payment programs, make contact with a substance abuse rehab center and ask about their payment options. It is beneficial to contact several programs so that you have a comparison of your choices with regards to rehab options and payment methods.

Medicaid Coverage

Medicaid is a type of health insurance which is made available to individuals in certain low-income tax brackets. Eligibility for Medicaid depends greatly on income and other circumstances including whether or not the person has dependents and if they receive any other assistance. Medicaid may possibly even cover the costs associated with drug treatment, and there are many drug and alcohol treatment centers throughout the country which are covered through Medicaid. Most drug treatment facilities which are covered through Medicaid may only deliver a limited treatment curriculum and may only provide such treatment on a short term basis, usually 30 days or less. People who have Medicaid should research which programs cover the greatest amount of treatment for the most amount of time to acquire the full benefits of a Medicaid rehab program.

State Financed Insurance besides Medicaid

Some people are covered through state financed insurance because they fail to qualify for Medicaid. Some states however offer state financed health insurance to those who cannot afford private health insurance plans. State financed health insurance programs will in some cases cover the costs associated with substance abuse treatment at a variety of drug rehabilitation programs around the country. State financed insurance other than Medicaid may cover both inpatient or outpatient substance abuse rehabilitation services. To find out which rehabilitation programs will accept state financed insurance, consult a drug and alcohol treatment professional.

Private or Personal Health Insurance

When someone is abusing drugs or alcohol and is looking for help, many effective drug treatment facilities accept private health insurance. Whereas some outpatient and short term rehab facilities accept private health insurance, far more effective substance abuse treatment programs which provide an inpatient or residential stay for at least 90 days are also an available option. These treatment programs which accept private health insurance can differ in terms of treatment curriculum, but those people who are covered by private health insurance are fortunate enough to have financial assistance when it comes to paying for a drug or alcohol treatment facility. For more information, consult with an addiction specialist at a drug or alcohol rehab facility in your area to see which programs your private health insurance will cover.
