Substance Abuse Programs

Substance abuse treatment is offered in a wide variety of distinct treatment settings with a variety of different treatment approaches. For example, some substance abuse treatment can be carried out on an outpatient basis, where the person will typically participate in treatment during the day but is allowed to return home daily. Other substance abuse treatment requires the person to stay in a hospital or residential facility during the entire course of treatment, which is especially beneficial in resolving more severe cases of addiction. Inpatient and residential substance abuse treatment can be done on a short term or long term basis, depending on different circumstances which can be different for each individual. Most substance abuse treatment will concentrate on getting the individual physically rehabilitated, and then concentrate on underlying psychological and emotional issues.

Outpatient Treatment

Drug rehab services which are provided on an outpatient basis are readily available to addicted people who have circumstances which prevent them from being able to take part in an inpatient rehabilitation center. An outpatient substance abuse treatment program provides many of the same services as an inpatient program, but allows for flexibility as opposed to an inpatient drug treatment program where the individual is required to stay and reside at the treatment facility until the treatment process is complete. Outpatient drug or alcohol treatment is also available for those who have already gone through residential or inpatient treatment but also need a thorough aftercare program which will provide further support and treatment to help them avoid relapse.

Residential Short-Term Treatment that is 30 days or less

Residential short-term treatment for drug or alcohol addiction is a variety ofrehabilitation program where the person will stay at the facility on an inpatient basis, and which typically requires a stay of 30 days or less. While attending residential short-term treatment the individual undergoes an intensive but brief course of treatment that commonly includes a supervised detoxification, counseling, and other forms of therapy which are aimed at helping the individual become rehabilitated and able to function without drugs in daily life once treatment is complete. Residential short-term treatment is not always effective for all scenarios of addiction, and most will require an aftercare program or further treatment in a more long-term residential setting.

Residential Long-Term Treatment that is 30 days or longer

Attending a residential long-term treatment facility (more than 30 days) is the best way ofaddressing a serious drug or alcohol addiction problem. This type of substance abuse rehabilitation facility is more intensive than others that only last a few weeks or those where the person in recovery is free to come and go as they please. Choosing a residential long-term rehabilitation program (more than 30 days) means that you as the client will reside at the rehabilitation facility around the clock while you are in recovery. While providing a more relaxed home-like atmosphere the person has access to counselors and staff at all times. Long term drug or alcohol rehabilitation facilities are a perfect choice for those who have a long history of addiction or who have had other unsuccessful attempts at drug or alcohol treatment in the past.

Co-Occurring Mental with Substance Abuse Issues

Persons with co-occurring mental and substance abuse disorders must address both issues if there is any hope for them to become fully rehabilitated. Some individuals take drugs or alcohol to ease symptoms of mental health problems, and some individuals take drugs which then, in turn, brings about symptoms which mimic mental health problems, such as anxiety and depression. Addiction treatment professionals know how to differentiate between the two, and can work with clients to appropriately treat real mental health conditions in tandem with any other substance abuse treatment that is done with the person. This has proven to be effective in keeping people with mental health issues off of drugs and mentally stable and happy.

Self Pay (Out of Pocket)

Self payment substance abuse rehab facilities are a great alternative to other types of rehab programs i.e. private medical insurance and state funded facilities. Individuals who are capable of attending self payment programs pay for their entire rehab process out of pocket. Keep in mind though, this does not mean that they will not have access to financial assistance if needed. It just means that self payment is their primary method of covering the cost of their substance abuse treatment program. To learn more about self payment at a specific program, make contact with a drug or alcohol rehab center and inquire as to their payment options. It is a good idea to contact a number of programs so that you have a comparison of your choices with regards to treatment options and payment methods.

Medicaid Coverage

Medicaid is a type of health insurance which is made available to individuals in certain low-income tax brackets. Eligibility for Medicaid depends greatly on income and other circumstances such as whether or not the person has dependents and if they receive any other assistance. Medicaid may even cover the costs associated with drug or alcohol rehabilitation, and there are many drug rehab facilities throughout the country which are covered through Medicaid. Most drug treatment programs which are covered through Medicaid may only provide a limited treatment curriculum and may only deliver such treatment on a short term basis, usually 30 days or less. People who have Medicaid should explore which programs cover the greatest amount of treatment for the most amount of time to reap the full benefits of such a program.

State Financed Insurance besides Medicaid

Some people are covered through state financed insurance because they fail to meet the eligibility requirements for Medicaid. Some states however offer affordable health insurance to those individuals who cannot afford private health insurance plans. State financed health insurance programs will sometimes cover the costs associated with substance abuse treatment at a variety of drug rehabilitation centers around the country. State financed insurance other than Medicaid may cover both inpatient or outpatient substance abuse rehabilitation providers. To find out which rehab programs will accept state financed insurance, speak with a drug treatment advisor.

Private or Personal Health Insurance

If an individual is addicted to drugs or alcohol and is looking for help, many effective substance abuse rehabilitation facilities accept private health insurance. Whereas some outpatient and short term programs accept private health insurance, far more effective drug rehab centers which offer an inpatient or residential stay for at least 90 days are also an available option. These rehab facilities which accept private health insurance can vary in terms of treatment curriculum, but those individuals who are covered by private health insurance are fortunate enough to have financial assistance when it comes to attending a drug or alcohol rehabilitation program. For more information, speak with with a treatment professional at a drug rehabilitation facility in your area to find out which programs your private health insurance will cover.
