  • Drug Overdose Facts
  • In the United States, there is currently a growing concern regarding the increase of Ritalin overdoses in small children; most of these cases were due to caregivers unintentionally giving patients excessive amounts of this medication.
  • When cocaine is smoked or used intravenously, it greatly increases the risk of a potentially fatal overdose due to respiratory or coronary complications.
  • Excuses for using methamphetamine vary from person to person, although most users cite having used the drug for increased energy and productivity, its low cost, self-medication for depression or attention deficits, and the euphoric high.
  • Individual counseling as part of drug rehab not only focuses on reducing or stopping illicit drug or alcohol use but other areas which may need particular focus such as employment status, illegal activity, and family/social relations.
  • Deaths caused by alcohol dependence in the U.S. are highest among Blacks, although a higher percentage of blacks than whites abstain from using alcohol.

Hospital Inpatient Programs

Hospital inpatient drug or alcohol rehabilitation is done in a hospital or similar setting and is supervised by doctors and other medical staff. Hospital inpatient treatment is sometimes necessary in the beginning stages of abstinence when the client may encounter the onset of medically dangerous withdrawal symptoms, which is sometimes the case when quitting alcohol as well as a category of prescription drugs known as benzodiazepines which should be monitored very carefully by medical professionals in case of any complications. Hospital inpatient treatment is also administered to individuals who choose to undergo medication assisted withdrawal, as is the case with opiate addicted individuals who wish to use this type of detox approach to manage the severe withdrawal symptoms associated with heroin or other opiate withdrawal. This type of opiate detoxification is not treatment in itself however, and these individuals will need further counseling and therapy to entirely recover from addiction.

Outpatient Treatment

Drug treatment services which are provided on an outpatient basis are readily available to addicted people who have circumstances which prevent them from being able to take part in an inpatient rehab program. An outpatient substance abuse rehabilitation center offers many of the same services as an inpatient program, but allows for flexibility as opposed to an inpatient drug rehabilitation facility where the individual is required to stay and reside at the treatment center until the treatment process has been fully completed. Outpatient drug or alcohol treatment is also offered for those who have already gone through residential or inpatient treatment but require a thorough aftercare and relapse prevention program which will provide further support and therapy to help them remain clean and sober.

Co-Occurring Mental with Substance Abuse Issues

Persons with co-occurring mental and substance abuse disorders must address both issues in order to become fully rehabilitated. Some individuals take drugs or alcohol to alleviate symptoms of mental health problems, and some individuals take drugs which then, in turn, causes symptoms which are identical to mental health disorders, such as anxiety and depression. Addiction treatment professionals know how to distinguish between the two, and can work with clients to appropriately treat real mental health problems in tandem with any other substance abuse treatment that is done with the individual. This has proven to be effective in keeping people with mental health disorders off of drugs and mentally stable and productive.

People who speak other languages, other than English that is, should receive drug or alcohol treatment which is on par with English speakers. Speakers of other languages should not feel that their treatment curriculum or treatment setting is going to be any less effective because they don't speak English. There are many substance abuse rehabilitation centers available which provide services to those who speak foreign languages, all of which offer a selection of programs to choose from. For example, some drug and alcohol treatment programs which provide services for those who speak other languages are only short term rehab facilities, but there are more long term options available. Self Pay (Out of Pocket)

Self payment drug treatment programs are a great alternative to other types of treatment programs i.e. private medical insurance and state funded programs. Individuals who are capable of attending self payment programs pay for their entire rehab process out of pocket. Keep in mind though, this does not mean that they will not have access to financial assistance if needed. It just means that self payment is their primary method of covering the cost of their drug treatment program. To learn more about self payment programs, make contact with a substance abuse rehab facility and ask about their payment options. It is a good idea to contact several programs so that you have a comparison of your choices regarding treatment options and payment methods.

Medicaid is a type of health insurance which is accessible to people in certain low-income tax brackets. Eligibility for Medicaid depends greatly on income and other factors such as whether or not the person has dependents and if they receive any other assistance. Medicaid may even cover the costs associated with drug or alcohol treatment, and there are many drug treatment centers throughout the country which are covered through Medicaid. Most drug and alcohol rehab programs which are covered through Medicaid may only deliver a limited treatment curriculum and may only supply such treatment on a short term basis, usually 30 days or less. Whereas some outpatient and short term rehab facilities accept private health insurance, far more beneficial substance abuse treatment facilities which require an inpatient or residential stay for at least 90 days are also an available option. These treatment programs which accept private health insurance can differ in terms of treatment curriculum, but those people who are covered by private health insurance are fortunate enough to have financial assistance when it comes to attending a drug or alcohol rehab program. Income Based Payment (Sliding Scale)

Paying for drug rehab can be a problem, because typically all resources have been exhausted because of their addiction. Many drug rehab programs recognize this fact which is why many drug and alcohol rehab facilities across the nation offer payment options known as a sliding scale fee. There are various factors put into the equation of determining what the fee will be from person to person, and these factors are based on individual circumstances such as income, cash on hand, living circumstances, the size of one's family etc. Sliding scale fees have been in use for some time as most drug rehab facilities would prefer to find a way to make it work financially so that those suffering with addiction can get the help they need.

Payment Assistance (based on Facility)

Many drug and alcohol treatment facilities in the United States offer payment assistance to men and women struggling with drug or alcohol addiction and want to get help. The person in need of treatment can select a rehab facility which ideally fits their situation, meaning the treatment plan and design of the program will provide them the best results. The addicted person can then talk to one of the treatment professionals at the drug or alcohol rehab program to go over what kind of payment assistance options are available or that they qualify for. The financial department in most drug rehab facilities are more than willing to work with potential clients to get them started by offering payment assistance, and if this is unavailable, treatment professionals will typically work with the individual to locate an equivalent or similar rehabilitation facility which is more affordable or that can provide workable financing options so that they can receive the help they so desperately need.
