Substance Abuse Programs

Substance abuse treatment takes place in a wide variety of different treatment settings with a variety of different treatment approaches. For example, some substance abuse treatment can be performed on an outpatient basis, where the individual will typically receive treatment during the day but is allowed to return home daily. Other substance abuse treatment requires the person to stay in a hospital or residential facility during the entire course of treatment, which is particularly beneficial in handling more serious cases of addiction. Inpatient and residential substance abuse treatment can be done on a short term or long term basis, depending on unique circumstances which can be different for each person. Most substance abuse treatment will concentrate on getting the person physically rehabilitated, and then focus on underlying psychological and emotional issues which will help them avoid relapse in the future.

Outpatient Treatment

Drug rehabilitation programs which are offered on an outpatient basis are available to addicted individuals who have circumstances which prevent them from being able to participate in an inpatient rehabilitation center. An outpatient drug rehab facility delivers many of the same services as an inpatient program, but allows for flexibility as opposed to an inpatient drug or alcohol rehab center where the person is required to remain at the rehab center until the treatment process has been fully completed. Outpatient drug rehabilitation is also available for those who have already gone through residential or inpatient treatment but also need a comprehensive aftercare program which will offer further support and therapy to help them avoid relapse.

Co-Occurring Mental with Substance Abuse Issues

Persons with co-occurring mental and substance abuse disorders must handle both issues if there is any hope for them to become fully rehabilitated. Some individuals take drugs or alcohol to relieve symptoms of mental health problems, and some people take drugs which then, in turn, brings about symptoms which are identical to mental health issues, such as depression and anxiety. Addiction rehabilitation professionals know how to differentiate between the two, and can work with clients to properly treat real mental health disorders in tandem with any other substance abuse treatment that is done with the individual. This has proven to be effective in keeping individuals with mental health problems off of drugs and alcohol and mentally stable and happy.

Women Only

Recovery from drug addiction is a process that can be difficult and in manyways intimidating. This is why some women seeking help with addiction feel more comfortable in rehab facilities created specifically for women. Women who are addicted to drugs or alcohol typicallyhave personal issues that are considerably different than that of males. In a drug or alcohol treatment program where all the clients are women, the recovering addict will feel more at ease and will be able to work through her personal issues that led to her substance abuse and addiction problems. Statistics show that up to seventy percent of women with addiction problems report having some type of sexual or physical abuse in their past. These sensitive issues are easier to work through in the company of other women without fear of judgment or retaliation.

Men Only

Drug and alcohol treatment facilities made solely for men are emerging across the country. Although rehab programs that treat both men and women continue to be the standard for drug rehabilitation, many rehab facilities are creating programs intended to help a particular target group. These centers are able to focus on what their client's particular needs are in a way that standard facilities cannot provide. Although these specialized types of rehab programs may not be needed for all recovering addicts, many men are deciding on men-only drug rehab programs. This recovery option is best suited for those who feel more comfortable among others of the same sex when sharing private and often difficult issues from the past. Addiction recovery is a challenging process for every addict and finding comfort among one's peer group is a good way of getting the support needed to make the process that much more endurable.

Criminal Justice Client Programs

Criminal justice clients frequently need drug rehabilitation due to problems with addiction. Due to the nature of the criminal justice system, there are distinct steps and guidelines that must be completed in order to be accepted into a criminal justice drug treatment center or recovery program. The first step is to establish the criminal justice clients eligibility. This step is accomplished by a panel of officials who determine how much and what type of treatment is necessary. Sometimes, the criminal justice clients obtain their drug and alcohol rehabilitation while they are incarcerated. For optimum results, they are encouraged, if not strictly directed, to continue their recovery process once they leave jail and enroll in a sober living home or a therapeutic community.

Spanish Services

There are more and more Spanish speaking clients walking into substance abuse treatment programs every day needing help. Because Spanish is such a common language in this country, many substance abuse rehabilitation programs are capable of providing services to Spanish speaking clients. Additionally, many treatment professionals make it a point to learn the language so as to be able to provide the treatment and therapy needed for Spanish speaking people.

Other Language Programs

People who speak other languages, other than English that is, should be able to receive drug or alcohol treatment which is on par with English speakers. Those who speak other languages should not feel that their treatment opportunities are limited or inferior because they don't speak English. There are quite a few substance abuse rehabilitation facilities available which provide services to those who speak foreign languages, all of which offer various programs to choose from. For example, some drug and alcohol rehab programs which can treat those who speak other languages are only short term rehab facilities, but there are more long term options available. Foreign language speakers should consult with an addiction professional in their area to choose a drug rehabilitation program which would be suitable to their needs.

Self Pay (Out of Pocket)

Self payment substance abuse treatment facilities are a great alternative to other types of treatment centers i.e. private medical insurance and state funded facilities. Individuals who are able to attend self payment programs pay for their entire rehab process out of pocket. Keep in mind though, this does not mean that they will not have access to financial assistance if needed. It just means that self payment is their primary method of covering the cost of their drug rehabilitation program. To learn more about self payment at a specific program, make contact with a drug rehab facility and ask about their payment options. It is a good idea to contact several facilities so that you have an understanding of your choices regarding rehab options and payment options.

Medicaid Coverage

Medicaid is a type of health insurance which is accessible to people in certain low-income tax brackets. Eligibility for Medicaid is dependent on income and other circumstances including whether or not the individual has dependents and if they receive any other assistance. Medicaid may even cover the costs associated with drug or alcohol rehabilitation, and there are many drug rehabilitation centers throughout the country which are covered through Medicaid. Many drug treatment facilities which are covered through Medicaid may only provide a limited treatment curriculum and may only deliver such treatment on a short term basis, typically 30 days or less. People who have Medicaid should explore which programs cover the greatest amount of treatment for the most amount of time to reap the full rewards of such a program.

State Financed Insurance besides Medicaid

Some people are covered through state financed insurance because they do not meet the eligibility requirements for Medicaid. Some states however offer state financed health insurance to those individuals who cannot afford private health insurance plans. State financed health insurance programs will sometimes cover the costs associated with substance abuse treatment at a wide variety of drug treatment programs around the country. State financed insurance other than Medicaid may cover both inpatient or outpatient substance abuse treatment services. To find out which treatment facilities will accept state financed insurance, consult a substance abuse treatment professional.

Private or Personal Health Insurance

If someone is addicted to drugs or alcohol and is looking for help, many effective drug or alcohol rehabilitation facilities accept private health insurance. Whereas some outpatient and short term programs accept private health insurance, far more beneficial substance abuse treatment programs which require an inpatient or residential stay for at least 90 days are also an available option. These programs which accept private health insurance can vary in terms of treatment curriculum, but those individuals who are covered by private health insurance are fortunate enough to have financial assistance when it comes to paying for a drug treatment program. For additional information, speak with with a treatment professional at a drug or alcohol treatment center in your area to find out which programs your private health insurance will cover.
