  • Anabolic steroids are not widely used by intercollegiate athletes although use is more than triple the national rate as compared to students who were not athletes.
  • Dexedrine withdrawal often causes severe depression and dysphoria, which is basically the opposite of the drugs effects.
  • For opiate addicted individuals, detox by itself is not treatment. Most opiate addicts will eventually resume taking them unless they get further help.

Substance Abuse Programs

Substance abuse treatment is offered in a wide variety of different treatment settings with a variety of different treatment approaches. For example, some substance abuse treatment can be carried out on an outpatient basis, where the person will typically participate in treatment during the day but is allowed to return home daily. Other substance abuse treatment requires the person to stay in a hospital or residential facility during the entire course of treatment, which is particularly helpful in handling more severe cases of addiction. Inpatient and residential substance abuse treatment can be done on a short term or long term basis, depending on unique circumstances which can be different for each person. Most substance abuse treatment will focus on getting the person physically rehabilitated, and then focus on underlying psychological and emotional issues.

Outpatient Treatment

Drug rehab services which are delivered on an outpatient basis are available to addicted individuals who have circumstances which prevent them from being able to participate in an inpatient rehab center. An outpatient drug rehab program provides many of the same services as an inpatient program, but allows for flexibility as opposed to an inpatient drug or alcohol treatment facility where the individual is expected to remain at the rehabilitation center until the treatment process has been fully completed. Outpatient drug or alcohol treatment is also available for individuals who have already gone through residential or inpatient treatment but also need a thorough aftercare program which will provide additional support and treatment to help them remain clean and sober.

Women Only

Rehabilitation from drug or alcohol addiction is a process that can be challenging and in manyways intimidating. This is why some women seeking recovery feel more comfortable in rehab centers created specifically for women. Women who are addicted to drugs or alcohol typicallyhave personal issues that are very different than that of males. In a drug or alcohol rehab program where all the clients are women, the recovering addict will feel more at ease and will be able to share her personal conflicts that led to her substance abuse and addiction problems. Statistics show that up to seventy percent of women with addiction problems report having some type of sexual or physical abuse in their past. These delicate issues are easier to address in the company of other women without fear of judgment or retaliation.

Men Only

Drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs designed exclusively for men are emerging across the country. Although rehab facilities that treat both men and women continue to be the standard for drug rehabilitation, many facilities are creating programs designed to help a specific target group. These facilities are able to focus on what their client's particular needs are in a way that standard programs are not. Although these specialized types of rehabilitation programs may not be needed for all recovering addicts, many men are selecting men-only addiction rehab programs. This rehabilitation option is ideally suited for those who feel more comfortable among others of the same sex when sharing private and often difficult issues from the past. Addiction recovery is a difficult process for every addict and finding comfort among one's peer group is a great way of receiving the support needed to make the process that much more endurable.

Dui/Dwi Offender Programs

DUI/DWI offenders are usually required to enroll in a certain number of hours either in counseling, meetings or a drug or alcohol treatment program. Each state has its own requirements when it comes to retribution for the DUI/DWI offender. Offenders who are deemed low to moderate DUI/DWI offenders will typically engage in some form of group counseling or therapy. These meetings are often held by a professional in the field of addiction recovery or a person with long-term sobriety involved in the Alcoholics or Narcotics Anonymous groups. DUI/DWI offenders deemed to be serious offenders will likely have to serve jail time at a minimum before beginning their mandatory counseling or substance abuse rehabilitation program.

Spanish Services

There increasing numbers of Spanish speaking clients walking into drug and alcohol treatment programs every day needing help. Because Spanish is such a widespread language in this country, many drug treatment programs are capable of providing treatment services to Spanish speaking clients. Additionally, many treatment professionals make it a point to learn the language so as to be able to provide the support and care needed for Spanish speaking people.

Other Language Programs

Those who speak other languages, other than English that is, should be able to receive drug or alcohol rehabilitation which is on par with English speakers. Speakers of other languages should not feel that their treatment opportunities are limited or inferior because they don't speak English. There are many substance abuse rehab programs available which cater to those who speak foreign languages, all of which offer a selection of programs to choose from. For example, some substance abuse treatment facilities which cater to people who speak other languages are only short term rehab facilities, and others are longer term programs. Foreign language speakers can seek the advice from an addiction professional in their area to choose a drug or alcohol treatment program that provides rehabilitation services in their specific language.

Self Pay (Out of Pocket)

Self payment drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers are a great alternative to other types of treatment centers i.e. private medical insurance and state funded facilities. Individuals who are capable of attending self payment programs pay for their entire rehab process out of pocket. Keep in mind though, this does not mean that they will not have access to financial assistance if needed. It just means that self payment is their primary method of covering the cost of their substance abuse treatment program. In order to learn more about self payment at a specific program, make contact with a drug rehabilitation center and ask about their payment options. It is a good idea to contact a number of programs so that you have an understanding of your choices regarding treatment options and payment options.

Medicaid Coverage

Medicaid is a type of health insurance which is offered to individuals in certain low-income tax brackets. Eligibility for Medicaid depends greatly on income and other factors such as whether or not the person has dependents and if they receive any other financial assistance. Medicaid may possibly even cover the costs associated with drug or alcohol treatment, and there are a lot of drug and alcohol treatment programs throughout the country which are covered through Medicaid. Most drug and alcohol treatment programs which are covered through Medicaid may only deliver a limited treatment curriculum and may only deliver such treatment on a short term basis, typically 30 days or less. Individuals who have Medicaid should explore which programs cover the greatest amount of treatment for the most amount of time to acquire the full benefits of a Medicaid rehab program.

State Financed Insurance besides Medicaid

Some individuals are covered through state financed insurance because they fail to qualify for Medicaid. Some states however offer state financed health insurance to those who cannot afford private health insurance. State financed health insurance programs will sometimes cover the costs associated with substance abuse treatment at a wide variety of drug rehab programs around the country. State financed insurance other than Medicaid may cover both inpatient or outpatient substance abuse rehabilitation services. To find out which rehab facilities will accept state financed insurance, speak with a substance abuse treatment advisor.

Private or Personal Health Insurance

When an individual is abusing drugs or alcohol and is seeking help, many effective substance abuse rehabilitation programs accept private health insurance. Whereas some outpatient and short term rehab facilities accept private health insurance, far more effective substance abuse treatment centers which offer an inpatient or residential stay for at least 90 days are also an available option. These treatment programs which accept private health insurance can vary in terms of treatment curriculum, but those individuals who are covered by private health insurance are fortunate enough to have financial assistance when it comes to paying for a drug rehab facility. For more information, consult with a treatment professional at a drug or alcohol treatment program in your area to see which programs your private health insurance will cover.
