  • Drug Overdose Facts
  • Consuming alcohol as a means of coping with negative feelings is a good indicator of heavy drinking as well as drinking problems in 19- to 25-year-olds.
  • Prescription opiate abuse, particularly in relation to drugs such as OxyContin, is responsible for a large percentage of the increase in the rates of drug overdoses throughout the United States today.
  • In Russia, heroin or other opiate addicted individuals receive narcotic detox and rehab instead of methadone maintenance treatment.
  • Heroin addicts who choose to be treated with methadone are not making real progress in terms of recovery, primarily because they have to take methadone everyday to not get dope sick.
  • Around 5,000 Americans under the age of 21 die as a result of underage alcohol drinking each year which includes about 1,900 deaths from motor vehicle crashes, 1,600 as a result of homicides, 300 from suicide, and hundreds from other injuries such as falls, burns, and drowning.

Substance Abuse Programs

Substance abuse treatment is offered in a wide variety of different treatment settings with a variety of different treatment approaches. For example, some substance abuse treatment can be done on an outpatient basis, where the individual will typically participate in treatment during the day but is allowed to return home daily. Other substance abuse treatment requires the person to reside in a hospital or residential facility during the entire course of treatment, which is especially beneficial in resolving more serious cases of addiction. Inpatient and residential substance abuse treatment can be done on a short term or long term basis, depending on different circumstances which can be different for each person. Most substance abuse treatment will concentrate on getting the individual physically rehabilitated, and then concentrate on underlying psychological and emotional issues.
